What does international travel insurance for U.S. citizens cover?

International travel insurance is designed to cover U.S. Citizens traveling outside of the United States. These plans are designed to cover the traveler for any new sickness or illness that may occur during international travel worldwide. It's very important to purchase Visitors Travel Insurance for US Citizens traveling abroad because most domestic insurance plans in the USA cover citizens in the USA. Plans sometimes offer out of network benefits and the out of pocket costs can be quite costly compared to buying international travel insurance.

Do I need travel insurance if my destination has low-cost healthcare?

We recommended travel insurance for all destinations when you are traveling outside of your home country. As travelers, we unfortunately never know the cost of an accident or illness until it occurs.

Most domestic plans offer limited to no coverage abroad. You must check with your policy to see what your coverage is as plan coverage does vary from plan to plan.

Is travel insurance mandatory for U.S. citizens traveling abroad?

Travel insurance depending on the country is not mandatory, however, many hospitals will require you to pay upfront for treatment abroad without any medical insurance which is a huge unknown risk until it happens.

How do I handle a medical emergency abroad with travel insurance?

All of the American Visitors Insurance companies we work with have customer service assistance worldwide in helping you with any medical emergency abroad. All plans will have an ID card issued with assistance details via phone, email and chat available to all travelers.

Emergency Medical evacuation offers air transportation to a suitable airport nearest to the Hospital where the Insured Person will receive Treatment. This type of benefit is used when there isn’t a hospital or provider nearby that can assist with emergency medical treatment. If you are traveling to a larger city, there should be no issues in finding a hospital or provider close by.

Most Travel Insurance for US Citizens plans can be extended as needed. Minimum extension is 5 days at a time. You must extend before the expiration date and will be sent a renewal notice closer to expiration.
